Timeline of Evolution

The earth is approximately 4.6 billion years old. Life began approximately 4 billion years ago and has been evolving ever since. The following timeline shows when various life forms appeared.

4600 million years ago
The earth formed from the accretion disc surrounding the sun.

4100 million years ago
The earth cooled down enough to form a solid crust, and the atmosphere and oceans formed.

4000 million years ago
The first proto-cellular organisms formed in the ocean.

3000 million years ago
Photosynthesis first occurred, caused by cyanobacteria in the ocean, which produced oxygen in the atmosphere.

2100 million years ago
Eukaryotes, the first complex cellular organisms, with organelles, appeared.

1200 million years ago
Sexual reproduction began, leading to faster evolution.

1000 million years ago
The first multicellular organisms appeared, including algae and seaweed.

600 million years ago
Sponges, jellyfish, and flatworms, the first animals, appeared. Flatworms were the first animals with brains and bilateral symmetry.

542-530 million years ago
A wide variety of new life forms appeared, including trilobites and acorn worms.

505 million years ago
The first vertibrates appeared in the form of jawless fish.

475 million years ago
The first primitive land plants formed, including lichens and fungi.

400 million years ago
The first insects and sharks evolved.

360 million years ago
Plants evolved seeds.

300 million years ago
The first reptiles appeared.

220 million years ago
The first dinosaurs and shrewlike mammals appeared.

200 million years ago
The first modern amphibians, including frogs and salamanders, appeared.

150 million years ago
The first birds, including the archaeopteryx, evolved from dinosaurs.

100 million years ago
The first flowers appeared.

65 million years ago
Dinosaurs became extinct.

50 million years ago
Hyracotherium, primitive horses the size of foxes and with large nails instead of hoofs, appeared.

40 million years ago
The first monkeys and apes appeared.

35 million years ago
The first grasses formed.

34 million years ago
The first dogs appeared.

15 million years ago
The first primitive humans appeared in the form of hominins.

4.8 million years ago
The first hominins walked upright.

2.0 million years ago
Tools were first used.

500,000 years ago
Homo erectus first used fire.

130,000 years ago
Neandrethal man evolved.

100,000 years ago
Homo sapiens, our current species, evolved.
